A 25-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a string of violent robberies targeting taxi drivers in Athens, while an alleged accomplice remains at large, according to police.
Authorities say that, based on preliminary findings, the suspect and his associate were involved in at least six attacks on cabdrivers since March.
The pair allegedly used a coordinated method, with one sitting in the front passenger seat and the other in the back, directly behind the driver. During the assaults, the rear passenger would reportedly loop the driver’s seatbelt around the victim’s neck, while threats were made using a pistol or knife. The pair reportedly stole cash, mobile phones and other personal belongings.
Police said the suspects typically operated during late-night hours, boarding taxis and paying fares in advance to gain the drivers’ trust. They would then direct the vehicles to isolated areas of the city before carrying out the attacks.
The 25-year-old was identified and arrested several days ago by motorcycle police while attempting to board another taxi. He was taken to the Agia Varvara police station, where a small quantity of cocaine was reportedly found in his possession.
He has since been brought before a prosecutor. Authorities have filed charges against him for participation in a criminal organization responsible for serial robberies targeting taxi drivers, as well as for violations of laws concerning weapons and narcotics. The search for his alleged accomplice is ongoing.
