Domestic and gender-based violence cases in Greece have declined by 15% in 2026 due to bolstered enforcement and new reporting tools, Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis said Saturday.
Speaking at the Delphi Economic Forum, Chrysochoidis noted that police currently receive 100 to 120 domestic violence complaints daily. In 2025, authorities referred 19,500 cases to court, while more than 1,300 victims received hospital treatment and 1,600 were placed in shelters. The minister highlighted that 30,000 emergency calls were made last year and more than 5,000 women activated a “panic button” mobile application. Approximately 500 perpetrators are currently imprisoned.
Regarding organized crime, Chrysochoidis announced a new task force to tackle nightclub-related violence and cigarette smuggling. He also addressed school violence, noting that penalties for parental neglect have been tightened and a digital bullying report platform is now active.
Public safety initiatives include the “Ariadne” program, which will permanently deploy 450 officers on Athens public transport. On the roads, traffic deaths fell by 146 in 2025. Chrysochoidis said six “smart” cameras are currently operating in Athens to detect speeding and mobile phone use, with 300 more scheduled for installation outside the capital by June. Additionally, authorities are developing a coordinated approach to address electronic fraud, noting that many identified suspects are from Roma communities.
