The Greek and French presidents struck a tone of strategic urgency and historical continuity at a state dinner at the Presidential Mansion in Athens on Friday, as both emphasized closer cooperation amid mounting geopolitical pressures.
President Konstantinos Tassoulas described Greek-French ties as “a model of cooperation for all of Europe,” arguing that longstanding assumptions about security and international order are increasingly under strain.
He said the visit of Emmanuel Macron signaled not only the strength of bilateral relations but also their expansion across multiple sectors.
Tassoulas pointed to the deep historical links between the two countries, noting that their cultural exchange has helped shape modern European identity. But his remarks focused largely on present-day challenges. He referenced ongoing conflict in Europe, tensions in the Middle East and unresolved issues such as the decades-long division of Cyprus following the Turkish invasion.
Against this backdrop, he argued that the European Union must move more decisively toward “strategic autonomy,” warning that no single country can deal with current threats alone.
For his part, Macron framed the relationship in both symbolic and strategic terms. Opening with the historic slogan “Greece, France, alliance,” he invoked shared historical moments – from French support during the Greek War of Independence to cultural milestones such as Eugène Delacroix’s philhellenic works.
He reiterated a longstanding French sentiment that Europe is inseparable from Greece, highlighting enduring public and political ties between the two nations.
Macron also underscored the practical dimension of the partnership, pointing to a 2021 bilateral defense and security agreement that he said has delivered “excellent results.”
The accord is expected to be renewed and expanded on Saturday, with both sides aiming to deepen cooperation in defense, economic competitiveness and regional stability.
“Our fate has been linked for centuries,” Macron said. “Never doubt that France and the French love you. Whenever you face a threat, you should know we will stand by you.”
