Cheese makers on Lesvos began collecting milk from dairy farmers on Friday, following assurances from the Rural Development and Food Ministry that the port of Mytilini will open for the shipment of mature cheese products to markets throughout Greece and abroad.
In an announcement by the local cheese producers association, it said that following the total lockdown imposed on the livestock products market on Lesvos due to cases of foot-and-mouth disease, cheese producers are awaiting further statements from the deputy minister of Rural Development and Food ahead of his visit to the island.
