Greece’s main opposition leader Nikos Androulakis on Friday launched a sharp attack on the conservative government over corruption, saying his PASOK party must win the next election – “even by one vote” – to restore normalcy and put the country on a stronger European footing.
Speaking at the Delphi Economic Forum, Androulakis accused the ruling New Democracy of presiding over entrenched corruption, arguing that Greece faces a “structural” problem that has deepened despite public expectations of cleaner governance after years of economic crisis. “Impunity fuels corruption,” he said, calling for institutional reforms to break with clientelist practices.
“If I win the elections, we will become a normal European country,” he said, framing his victory as a turning point and pledging political change and stronger institutions.
Androulakis said PASOK’s goal is to emerge as the largest party, even by a narrow margin, so that its policy program can form the core of the next government.
“The Greek people will decide the balance of power,” he said, adding that any future alliances would depend on the election outcome and which parties could align with PASOK’s agenda for change and stability.
However, he ruled out any cooperation with New Democracy, saying “there is no scenario” under which PASOK would partner with the ruling party.
He also suggested that early elections could not be ruled out, questioning whether the vote would take place in a year as scheduled.
