ATHEX: Late rally offsets losses posted earlier

Stocks at the Greek bourse offset their midday losses and closed Thursday’s session with moderate gains, mainly driven by the growth seen among mid-caps. The local market appears to toe the line of the major European bourses, which are much more cautious than the markets in the US or the Far East, which post one record after another. There is little hope of any significant boost from the Standard & Poors verdict on the Greek credit rating, expected late on Friday.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 2,234.68 points, adding 0.23% to Wednesday’s 2,229.59 points. The large-cap FTSE-25 index expanded 0.19%, ending at 5,675.52 points, outperformed by mid-caps that rose 0.85%.

The banks index grew 0.13%, as Piraeus advanced 1.31%, and Bank of Cyprus grabbed 0.65%, while Alpha parted with 1.19% and National gave up 0.14%.

In total, 63 stocks reported gains, 47 sustained losses and 11 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to €198.2 million, down from Wednesday’s €230.3 million.

In Nicosia, the general index of the Cyprus Stock Exchange increased 0.01% to close at 286.81 points.
