A convict who escaped from prison on Easter Sunday and engaged in a string of crimes in the following days was arrested on Crete Thursday, police said.
The 30-year-old man, who was only identified as a foreign national, escaped from a prison near Hania. Police said he stole a car in Hania on Tuesday, and on Wednesday robbed a tourist at gunpoint in Iraklio, taking her mobile phone.
He was arrested in Rethymno following a concerted police operation. A search of the stolen car produced three mobile phones, cashcards, a knife and jewellery – as well as a seashell and opercula, or trapdoors from sea snails that are sometimes used in jewellery.
