Lesvos ferry freight disrupted as farmers plan new protest Thursday

Ferry services between Lesvos and mainland Greece continued to be disrupted Wednesday afternoon after livestock farmers blocked the loading and unloading of freight trucks at the port of Mytilene in protest over measures linked to efforts to contain foot-and-mouth disease.

The ferry Blue Star Patmos departed for Piraeus carrying only passengers and private vehicles after farmers prevented 42 trucks, many transporting food and perishable goods, from disembarking upon arrival and later from boarding for the return trip.

The farmers say the restrictions are damaging the local economy and are planning a new protest Thursday outside the regional government headquarters on Lesvos.

In solidarity, regional and municipal authorities announced temporary closures of public services, while businesses, restaurants and public sector unions also planned work stoppages during the demonstration period.
