Police fired at a getaway vehicle during a pursuit of suspected burglars on Good Friday evening in Vari, authorities said.

According to the police, shortly before 9 p.m. three unidentified suspects broke into a house on Sifnou Street in the eastern Attica town by smashing a first-floor window and stole about €5,000 before fleeing in a white SUV.

Following a search of the area, officers from the police motorcycle unit spotted the suspects’ vehicle at the intersection of 2nd Mararchias and Haravgi streets.

Police said the driver allegedly made a threatening maneuver toward the officers, appearing to attempt to ram their motorcycles.

An officer then fired three shots at the vehicle’s tires in an effort to immobilize it, police said. The suspects nevertheless managed to escape.

Three shell casings from the officer’s weapon were recovered at the scene, while an investigation is under way to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
