Repairs to floating platforms in Schinias.
Twenty‑two years after its construction, Greece’s Olympic Rowing Center at Schinias, northeast of Athens, is undergoing a full restoration, with its 2.2‑kilometer water course already back in use by the national team.
The site, built for €88 million inside the environmentally sensitive Schinias wetland, had deteriorated after being largely abandoned following the 2004 Games.
“The facility was practically unmaintained since 2004,” said technical consultant Elina Dretta, noting rotted floating docks, leaking buildings and clogged water channels that left installations “sitting on the bottom.”
The Hellenic Olympic Committee initiated the rehabilitation last year after reaching an agreement with the Public Properties Company. The project is overseen by Anaplasi SA and funded with about €1 million from Alpha Bank.
Crews cleared reeds, repaired docks and spectator stands, restored the hydraulic system and used divers to fix underwater damage. Building repairs are now underway, with work carried out in cooperation with the state environmental authority.
