Two people have been taken into custody in Thessaloniki for stealing copper cables from a railway building site and resisting arrest, police said Wednesday.

Four men were seen taking the cables by a guard who called police. When officers arrived at the spot in the Kordelio district the suspects allegedly rammed a patrol car with their car and ran off on foot.

Two 27-year-olds were arrested. They face charges including theft and attempted grievous bodily harm.

Thieves frequently target copper cables, particularly along railways, to sell the valuable metal to recyclers.
