Greece’s Supreme Court prosecutor is set to take over the most serious strands of an expanding illegal surveillance investigation, following a ruling by a single-judge misdemeanors court in Athens.
The case stems from a 2022 wiretapping scandal involving the use of spyware, including Predator, to target politicians, journalists and other figures.
After a revealing trial, the court referred its decision and records to the Athens first-instance prosecutor. Authorities have since split the case, forwarding its most critical components to the Supreme Court, where a senior prosecutor will be appointed.
The transferred probes focus on alleged espionage, the role of accomplices and potential violations involving the distribution of spyware. Investigators will examine four convicted businessmen, additional individuals identified during proceedings, and any others who may be implicated.
Judges cited the broad range of alleged targets, including ministers, lawmakers, judges and military officials, as well as their absence as witnesses, as grounds for escalation.
Separate inquiries into alleged perjury in court and before parliament will remain with lower-level prosecutors, focusing on conflicting testimony and disputed evidence that emerged during the trial.
