Fresh push to fill doctor positions on remote islands

The Health Ministry has announced the hiring of 114 permanent doctors for public hospitals in remote and island regions, aiming to address chronic medical staff shortages. These positions, repeatedly unfilled due to a lack of interest, include critical roles such as pediatricians and anesthesiologists for underserved areas like Leros and Kos. Applications are open from January 13 to January 27, 2025.

Doctors have long highlighted understaffing issues, with many covering excessive shifts. A recent open letter from physicians on Leros described dire staffing during the holiday season, with emergencies managed by minimal personnel. Similarly, neonatal units like the one in Patra struggle with over 100% capacity.

To attract candidates, the government has enhanced incentives, including a €3,600-€7,200 annual remote-area allowance and reduced mandatory service periods. While officials acknowledge persistent challenges, the initiative aims to bring immediate relief to overstretched healthcare facilities critical to remote communities.
