Dispute grows over Kea luxury resort expansion

[InTime News]

More than 100 residents of Kea island are urging the municipal authority to take a clear position on a proposed 70% expansion of the One & Only resort, a project that has drawn growing opposition.

In a letter sent this week, signatories say the municipality has opposed large-scale new tourism investments but has avoided stating whether it supports or rejects the expansion of an existing complex. The resort, which began operating in 2024, seeks to increase capacity by 235 beds, expand facilities and raise permitted building density.

Residents cite concerns over water use, housing pressures for workers, and restricted beach access, which they say effectively functions as private. A council discussion was postponed in November after absences, and was not rescheduled.

Mayor Eirini Velissaropoulou said any decision would follow legal procedures, adding the issue should return to the council for a vote.
