Authorities have broken a criminal organization that specialised in burgling shops selling alcoholic drinks in the Greater Athens region, stealing merchandise worth more than €25,000 in total, police said Wednesday.
A police statement said the gang concentrated on breaking into shops that were closed for the day, but on occasion targeted stock in ones that were open and used rented cars to carry off their loot.
A 55-year-old man was arrested south of Athens and faces charges of alleged membership of a criminal organization. The gang is believed to have hit at least 14 shops since October 2025.
