Protecting justice | eKathimerini.com

The institution of justice needs to be safeguarded. It cannot be left to the mercy of attacks from extreme populist voices when it is striving to do its job in extremely difficult circumstances, adjudicating cases that have caused pain to Greek society. At the same time, it must be allowed to operate without interference when called upon to investigate high-profile cases that carry special political significance.

Progress has been made in reforming the justice system. Amending Article 86 of the Constitution on political accountability – a change all the political parties agree to – will set a long-standing dysfunction to rights. What needs to come first right now, though, is to protect the institution and convince the Greek public that, at the end of the day, justice is being served.
