Α vibrant holiday event transformed Thessaloniki’s seafront into a festive spectacle on Sunday, as rowing athletes dressed as Santa Claus paddled through the waters, spreading seasonal cheer. Organized by the ThesSUP team, the event celebrated the growing sport of stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) while infusing it with Christmas spirit.
Approximately 30 participants, clad in Santa suits, glided across the Thermaic Gulf for the fourth annual Santa SUP, creating a striking scene of red and white on the water. Beginning at the iconic White Tower, they paddled toward Thessaloniki’s port, greeting onlookers along the bustling Nea Paralia (New Waterfront) with waves and smiles.
During their journey, the SUP athletes encountered members of the Coastal Rowing Club of the Friends of the Sea association, who were also engaging in a festive rowing activity.
Virginia Panagiotopoulou, a coach from the Nautical Club of Thessaloniki, emphasized the dual purpose of the event.
“Our goal is to establish Santa SUP as a beloved holiday tradition while showcasing the sport of stand-up paddleboarding,” she told local media.
“SUP is one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, offering a unique way to connect with the sea. Thessaloniki, with its accessible and picturesque waterfront, is an ideal setting for this activity.”
