Latest femicide shocks nation

Ιn a chilling confession, a 39-year-old man from the Ambelokipi district of Athens told authorities he murdered his 34-year-old wife after discovering she was allegedly planning to leave him.

The defendant was brought before an investigating judge at noon on Friday, where he was given a deadline to prepare his defense on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred on December 1, when the suspect claimed to have overheard his wife talking to another man about taking their eldest son and leaving him. In a fit of rage, he attacked her with a hammer, killing her. Afterward, he hid her body in the attic of their home, only confessing to the murder two days later when he contacted the police. Upon their arrival, he led them to the location where he had concealed the body which had already began to decompose.

His arrest is the latest in a series of femicides in Greece this year, underlining a concerning trend of violence against women. The case is the 14th reported femicide in 2024, signaling an alarming rise in such crimes.
